AMI Labs, co-founded by former Meta AI chief Yann LeCun, has closed a massive $1.03 billion seed round at a $3.5 billion pre-money valuation, marking Europe's biggest seed funding ever. The Paris-based startup, with LeCun as executive chairman and entrepreneur Alexandre LeBrun as CEO, aims to develop 'world models'—AI systems that understand the real world through physical interactions rather than just predicting text tokens. High-profile backers include Nvidia, Temasek, Bezos Expeditions, Cathay Innovation, Greycroft, and angels like Eric Schmidt and Mark Cuban.

This funding underscores growing investor enthusiasm for alternative AI architectures amid concerns that large language models alone cannot achieve true intelligence. World models promise breakthroughs in fields like robotics, manufacturing, healthcare, and wearables by enabling AI to grasp physical reality. AMI Labs' first partner, digital health startup Nabla—where LeBrun serves as chairman—will gain early access to these models, potentially transforming clinical workflows in a competitive health AI landscape.

The star-studded team, featuring Meta's Laurent Solly as COO, Saining Xie as chief science officer, Pascale Fung as chief research officer, and Michael Rabbat as VP of world models, helped exceed the initial €500 million target. Operating from hubs in Paris, New York, Montreal, and Singapore, the lab plans to prioritize elite talent and compute resources while committing to open-source code and research papers.

While commercial products may take years, AMI Labs intends to test models in real-world scenarios with partners early on. CEO LeBrun predicts 'world models' will become the next AI buzzword, positioning the startup as a European contender against U.S. and Chinese giants in the race for human-like AI.
