Substack Unveils Built-In Recording Studio to Supercharge Video Creation for Creators

Substack has introduced the Substack Recording Studio, a new desktop-only feature that allows creators to pre-record video content directly within the platform. Supporting solo sessions or discussions with up to two guests—who can join via desktop or mobile—the tool includes screen sharing, custom watermarks, and automatic generation of clips and thumbnails post-recording. This eliminates the need for external apps like Zoom or editing software, streamlining the workflow from recording to publication.

The launch builds on Substack's ongoing expansion into video, following video uploads in 2022, livestreaming with monetization last year, and a $20 million Creator Accelerator Fund. Internal data reveals that creators using audio or video in the past 90 days experienced 50% faster revenue growth compared to text-only peers. Additional enhancements include logo overlays for branding, improved thumbnail customization, and screen sharing for livestreams, positioning Substack as a comprehensive creator platform rivaling Patreon and YouTube.

This matters for creators in the evolving creator economy, where multimedia drives engagement and earnings. By consolidating production tools, Substack lowers barriers for writers and podcasters to experiment with video, potentially boosting retention and monetization through paywalled content and email distribution.

Looking ahead, Substack plans a virtual masterclass on April 1 to demo the studio. Future updates may add mobile support, advanced editing, captions, and analytics, further solidifying its multimedia ambitions.
