Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY) announced it has begun flight testing its production-version electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) air taxi, marking the Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) phase with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This first FAA-conforming aircraft, registered N547JX, is undergoing initial trials by Joby pilots at its Marina, California facility, preparing for official FAA pilot inspections later this year. The testing validates years of development and represents the final stretch toward full type certification.

The development coincides with Joby's selection for the White House-backed eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), enabling early operations in 10 states including Arizona, Florida, New York, Texas, and Utah. These initiatives cover passenger transport, cargo delivery, medical response, and autonomous flight tech like Joby's Superpilot platform. With a new 700,000-square-foot facility in Dayton, Ohio, Joby plans to scale production to over 500 aircraft annually and up to four per month.

This progress positions Joby as a frontrunner in urban air mobility, targeting a massive market for efficient, zero-emission short-haul flights that could transform city commuting and logistics. FAA partnerships and pilot program clearances signal strong regulatory support amid growing industry momentum.

Looking ahead, Joby anticipates commercial air taxi services in 2026, with eIPP flights potentially starting within 90 days of finalized agreements. Successful TIA testing and state operations will be key to unlocking widespread adoption, though challenges like infrastructure and public acceptance remain.
